Put it into context

Examples may include a home, investment property, savings, shares, superannuation, a business interest or a vehicle. Record the value with an as-at date and source; an estimate is different from a verified sale price. Ownership matters: an asset held by a company or trust is not automatically the same as a personally owned asset. A frequent confusion is to count an asset at full value in an individual view while also counting another person's share. Moneysmart's net worth guidance shows why assets and debts belong in the same picture.

Which assets should I list in a financial portfolio?

List the assets relevant to the scope you chose and that you can describe and value reasonably. Add ownership and source details.

Is a mortgage an asset?

No. A mortgage balance is generally a liability; the property is the asset.
