What does Australian net worth by age actually show?

The answer depends on the measure, population and year. A household average is not an individual's typical balance, and a median answers a different question.

Read the measure first

A chart needs its unit, year and source.

These figures describe surveyed Australian households in 2019–20. They are averages for age groups of the household reference person, rather than a typical person's balance today.

What these figures can tell you

The table uses the ABS Survey of Income and Housing, 2019–20. Households are grouped by the age of their reference person; these are household averages, not individual balances or age-specific medians. The survey covers private dwellings and excludes very remote areas. Use this historical context alongside your own dated records, not as a target or a current valuation.

What is the difference between average and median net worth by age?

The average is total wealth divided by the number of observations; the median is the middle observation. High-wealth households can pull an average upward.

Are Australian net worth figures measured per person or household?

It depends on the published ABS table. The unit must be printed beside every value; never compare an individual figure directly with a household figure without explanation.

How current is the ABS net worth by age data?

The series shown covers July 2019 to June 2020, released by the ABS on 28 April 2022. It is historical data, not a 2026 wealth benchmark. We checked the source on 7 October 2026.
