When does a spreadsheet stop being enough?

A spreadsheet can calculate a figure well. The harder question is whether someone can understand the owners, loans, policies and documents behind that figure.

Choose by the job

Which way will another person understand?

A familiar spreadsheet may be enough for a small, clear set of records. A connected portfolio helps when owners, loans, policies and documents need to make sense together.

Where a spreadsheet works

It is flexible, familiar and good for custom formulas, particularly when one person manages a small number of records. You control the layout and can inspect every calculation. It may be the right long-term choice if the task stays simple.

Where a connected wealth tracker helps

Financial Portfolio gives assets, liabilities, people, entities, policies and documents distinct records that can be linked. Its dashboard calculates summaries from the values you enter; viewers can be given read-only access to selected sections, with explicit document sharing. That structure can reduce the explanation needed when family or a professional helps. It also means learning a new workflow and maintaining values manually. Automatic transaction feeds are not currently available.

A fair decision test

Can your current system answer “What do we own?”, “What do we owe?”, “Who owns it?”, “Where is the current policy?” and “Who may see it?” without the original author present? If yes, you may not need another tool. If no, use the records guide to identify the gaps, then examine the documented features.

Can a wealth tracker replace a financial spreadsheet entirely?

It can replace many record-keeping sheets, but custom models may still belong in a spreadsheet. Financial Portfolio does not import a workbook into a complete linked portfolio automatically.

What does Financial Portfolio lack compared with some wealth apps?

The current app does not automatically connect bank transactions or refresh all values. If automation is your main requirement, compare current integrations carefully.

Which option is easier for a family member to use?

The one with clear names, current records, understandable access and a maintained handover process. Structure helps, but no tool can fix stale or missing information on its own.
